Coaching Highlights: In 2004, Mike Teti led the men’s eight to a world record in the heat and a gold medal in the final at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The victory marked the first time the U.S. had won the Olympic title in the event since 1964. Last year in Gifu, Japan, Teti once again led his men’s eight to a world championship. It marked the fifth time his eight had won gold in the event in the past nine years. Teti was named USRowing’s head men’s sweep coach after the Olympic Games in 1996 and head men’s coach following the 2000 Olympics. He was the coach of the only men’s eight in U.S. history to win three consecutive world championship titles, from 1997 to 1999. The feat garnered him three consecutive National Coach of the Year honors to accompany the Developmental Coach of the Year title he won in 1996. In 2003, Teti coached the men’s eight to a silver medal at the world championships, while the men’s four with coxswain won a gold medal. At the 2002 FISA World Championships, he coached the men’s eight to a bronze medal. At the 2000 Olympic Games, all of his sweep boats reached the finals and the men’s pair won a silver medal. In 1999, he led the U.S. men to a total of four gold medals at the world championships, and his crews won three medals at the 1998 World Championships. Teti’s other coaching feats include a gold medal in the eight and pair with coxswain in 1997 and a bronze in the lightweight four at the 1996 Olympic Games. His coaching career began in 1982 at Temple University where his crews won six Dad Vail titles in his seven years as coach. In 1989, Teti became the men’s freshmen coach at Princeton University, winning the freshmen men’s eight competition at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships five times.

Competitive Highlights: Teti was a 12-time national team member and a three-time Olympian. He began his rowing career in 1973 at Monsignor Bonner High School and earned a berth on the junior national team one year later, rowing the junior eight at the 1974 FISA Junior World Championships. He continued his rowing career at St. Joseph’s University, graduating with a degree in sociology in 1978. From 1977 to 1993, Teti won 24 national championships, a silver medal at the 1979 Pan American Games in the four, a bronze and a gold in the world championships in the eight (1985 and 1987), and a bronze at the 1988 Olympic Games in the eight. In 1987, he was named USRowing’s Male Athlete of the Year after rowing bow in the first U.S. world champion men’s eight in 13 years.

Personal: In the fall of 1999, Teti was inducted into the St. Joseph’s University Athletic Hall of Fame. He also has been inducted into both the Monsignor Bonner High School and USRowing Halls of Fame. He is married to Kay Worthington, a nine-time veteran of the Canadian National Rowing Team who won two gold medals in the women’s four and eight at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
